Travel the Canals -- In a Kayak?

I wish I had a photo of the voyage David Kocieniewski, a reporter for the NY Times and his girlfriend, took in the inflatable kayak they brought with them on a recent trip to Venice. There's a great story and a great video on the Times website.

Obviously, this photo isn't of David in his kayak! I pulled it from my files and, being lazy tonight, it was the first gondola photo I came to.

It's a bit hard to imagine a kayak in Venice - but not impossible. There are always new and novel ways to get about the waterways of this unique city.

Thanks for such lovely images of this beautiful town. I have been to Venice three times now, and plan to go yet again.

There are plenty of photos of kayaks in Venice at www.venicekayak.com and on my personal flickr profile, username seindal.

hey!
love your blog - went to venice last year andit is undeniably beautiful.

However, there's a poll (here - http://www.pollthepeople.com/content.php?type=news&cid=23) on the most overrated travel desitnations and Venice would get my vote - touristy, expensive, stuffed with gimmicks and tricky not to get ripped off...

This article is one of the more extreme examples of irresponsible journalism I have seen in quite a while.

Kayaking in Venice is a horrible idea, and a great way to get run over by a taxi or a transport boat!

Well, Nan, you're quite wrong there. I have paddled hundreds of kilometres and many many hours in Venice, and it's just as safe as rowing a mascareta or any other small rowed vessel.

As always, the important part of paddling safety is to know the rules and conditions your going into.
